Custom Furniture in Johannesburg: What to Know Before You Order

Custom furniture means having a piece made or adapted to your own specifications, rather than buying something off the shelf in a fixed size, colour or configuration. If you’re considering it for the first time, here’s what’s worth knowing before you send an enquiry.

What Counts as “Custom” Furniture?

Customisation can mean different things depending on the piece. It might be a sofa in a specific fabric and configuration, a dining table sized for an unusual room, or built-in joinery like wardrobes or cabinetry designed around your exact space. The common thread is that the piece is designed around your requirements rather than picked from fixed stock options.

What to Look for in a Custom Furniture Maker

Whoever you choose to work with, it’s worth checking a few things upfront:

  • How the enquiry process works — do they need measurements and photos, or a showroom visit?
  • Warranty terms — what’s covered if something arrives with a manufacturing defect?
  • Return and exchange policy — custom pieces are often treated differently to standard stock items, so it’s worth understanding this before you commit.
  • How changes are communicated — will you see updates before the piece is finalised?

Questions Worth Asking Before You Commit

A short checklist to work through before placing a custom order:

  • Have I measured the space accurately, including doorways and access points for delivery?
  • Do I understand the warranty and what happens if there’s a manufacturing defect?
  • Am I clear on the return and exchange policy for custom-made items specifically?
  • Have I confirmed how to reach the business if I have questions during the process?

How Customisation Works at Luxury Furniture Supplies

For selected products, we offer an enquiry-led Furniture Customisation service. Rather than listing every possible configuration as a separate product, you send us your requirements — measurements, photos of the space, and what you’re looking for — and we work from there. Our showroom in Sandton, Johannesburg is available for consultations and collections by appointment.

On the policy side: new furniture is covered by a six-month warranty against manufacturing defects, and defective products can be returned within 30 days. Change-of-mind returns aren’t accepted, and exchanges are considered after assessment, with return transport costs covered by the customer. Full detail is on our Delivery & Quality Warranty page.
